Beijing, located in the northeastern corner of China, is the capital city and the country's center of politics and culture.
In the urban area, the place to start is Tian'anmen Square, the geographical and psychic centre of the city,
with the Forbidden City at the north end. The Qianmen area, a noisy market area at the south,
is a bit more alive, and ends in style with one of the city's highlights, the Temple of Heaven.
The giant freeway, Chang'an Jie, zooming east-west across the city, is a corridor of high-rises with a few museums,
shopping centers and even the odd ancient site worth tracking down.
When making an expedition to the outskirts, you will have much more to explore.
The Summer Palace with its cool features - water, gardens and hills - was the palace of choice for vacationing emperors
and Dowager Empresses. Don't miss The Great Wall, China's most famous feature! It was selected as the "World Cultural Heritage" by UN in in 1987.
Beijing is the front line of China's attempts to grapple with modernity, which is especially obvious after
the successful pursuit of the 2008 Olympic Games. Actually, Beijing has already embarked on the new-millennium
roller-coaster and is taking the rest of China with it.
Staying in Beijing is not a problem. Many deluxe 5-star hotels lie on the Chang'an Street,
like the Beijing Hotel and the Hilton Hotel. Cheap lodging places are easy to find, too. Just choose one fitting your budget.
Eating is even more alternative. From Chinese traditional dishes to various local snacks,
you will gain a wonderful impression on food in Beijing. Moreover, Beijing has a good reputation for shopping.
There are five main shopping districts in Beijing: Wangfujing, popular but overrated; Xidan,
with giant department stores are of limited interest to visitors; Dongdan, mainly selling brand-name clothes;
Qianmen, with a few oddities among the cheap shoes and clothes stores;
and Liulichang is a good place to get a lot of souvenir.
